Eastern’s Philanthropic FootprintsThe 9/21 Earthquake left the land ruined and families broken, causing people sorrow and distress. In response, the Eastern Charity Foundation and the Eastern Culture Foundation were founded in the spring of 2000!

In 1999, Taiwan suffered its biggest catastrophe of the century, the 9/21 Earthquake. The head of Eastern, Gary Wang, immediately called on Eastern’s employees to do their best to help out with disaster relief. On top of this, Eastern founded the Eastern Charity Foundation and Eastern Culture Foundation in the spring of 2000 to activate the power of compassion, engage in philanthropy through action, and sow the seeds of happiness for Taiwan.

For more than ten years, Eastern has been going into different indigenous villages across Nantou, Lanyu, Hualien, Taitung, and Pingtung, from Alishan to Lala Mountain, to stay close to the land and people of indigenous villages. The campaign that rewarded Little Scholars and Little Painters of the Tribal Villages for four consecutive years inspired rich and boundless creativity in children through books and colors. The second-hand music instrument collection program, Symphony of the Mountain and Sea Fairies, enabled children to express joy through playing musical melodies. The Breakfasts Made of Love project, which has been implemented for more than ten years, has helped almost 10,000 tribal village children go to school without feeling hungry. A variety of scholarships have enabled 40,000 young students to go to school without worries.

Eastern Charitable Scholarships

For many years, Eastern has been investing in different indigenous villages, and for more than 17 years, the Sending Love to Tribal Villages project has been fostering hope for indigenous children. The Breakfasts Made of Love project was initiated in 2007 to help children begin their days with a breakfast that fills them up and gives them enough energy. In 2003, Eastern started taking NT$50 million out of our profits to fund eight scholarship programs. These have enabled outstanding students from financially underprivileged families to continue their studies, go abroad, and make their dreams a reality. Eastern’s diligent efforts in education and investments in the future have earned recognition from society as a whole. This is evidenced in several awards, including the Meritorious Group Award for Promotion of Indigenous People's Social Development, Irrigating Taiwan – Contribution to Education Award, and the Best Volunteer Leadership Award presented by the International Volunteer Day Association.

Eastern Culture Foundation

Adopting pragmatic approaches that plant deep roots and sow seeds, the Eastern Culture Foundation works to speak up about cultural issues and create a social environment that benefits cultural development. As a leader in Taiwan's media industry, we use communication technology to guide the public to pay attention to cultural issues through documenting, discussion, and seminars.

We play a part in fostering cross-straits communication and interaction, to promote quality cultures. We not only call on the public to participate in these activities with a more enthusiastic attitude, but also brings Taiwan’s image to the world stage in tangible forms.

We at Eastern not only care about our communities, but also extend our kindness to the world.

We continue to develop public welfare. Limited by no regional or racial boundaries, we are spreading love further and enhancing the power of love.

To fulfill our corporate social responsibility and encourage positive social atmosphere, Eastern Multimedia Group insists on giving back to society in return for the things that we take from society. For this, the Eastern Charity Foundation and the Eastern Culture Foundation were founded. In addition to giving long-term caring attention to Taiwanese indigenous young students, we are also committed to encouraging cross-strait youth cultural exchange, in order to enhance mutual understanding and learning between the two sides.

From 2007 until today, Eastern has been putting our best efforts into organizing the Cross-strait Little Angel Exchange. The aim is to build bridges between children from the two sides of the Strait and inject warmth into cross-strait cultural exchange.

  • 1997-2007 Cross-strait Little Angels of Peace
For 10 consecutive years, Eastern welcomed visiting groups of Little Peace Angels to Taiwan from many provinces in China. Eastern arranged television studio tours, explained the process of filming shows, let children serve as little anchor interns, and welcomed visitors at dinner receptions.
  • 2007-2018 Cross-strait Little Happy Angel Exchange and Visits
Eastern and Fujian BTNG Group have worked together to hold six Cross-strait Little Angel Exchanges. This year (2019), the seventh Exchange will be held, at which Little Angels from Taiwan will pay a return visit to Fujian.
  • Little Angels from Shanghai started coming to visit in February 2018.
Little Angels from Taiwan are also invited to pay a return visit to Shanghai this year.

Exchange visit mechanism: Organizer assumes costs and organizes schedules after visitors land.
(Eastern invites indigenous children to visit mainland China and exhibit indigenous people’s singing and dancing skills.)
Program content: Talent exchange between children from two sides of the Strait (welcome dinner; farewell dinner); cultural exchange (visits to well-known historic sites); happy exchange (learning traditional cultures; sharing delicious food).

Breakfasts Made of Love

Half of the children in rural tribal villages don’t have breakfast to eat every day, due to the financial disadvantages their families experience. The children go to school hungry, which greatly affects their learning and growth. In more than a decade since 2007, Eastern Charity Foundation has helped 171 schools in tribal villages and donated tens of millions of NTD. This has brought 2,500 children out of hunger and enabled them to learn with joy.

Sending Love to Tribal Villages

In 2003, Eastern Charity Foundation was awarded the Meritorious Group Award for Promotion of Indigenous People's Social Development for assistance given when. Shanxing Elementary School in Hualien was abolished, leaving more than 20 children who needed other places to attend school. Eastern Charity Foundation donated vehicles to help transport the children to and from school, and asked the enterprise’s employees to sponsor Shanxing Tribal Village. At the end of every year, the Foundation prepares warm clothes, Christmas gifts, and children’s books for schoolchildren in the tribal villages, in hopes that these children will spend the winter warm and with everything they need.
